It was a Celtic festival,
which marked the end of summer
and also the beginning of
the new year.
People wanted to scare away evil spirits and they played games
using apples,which were considered sacred, to predict good luck.
Witches were seen and cats
were considered their helpers.
Eventually Christian rites
replaced the pagan ones
and the evening before All Saints/Hallows became
All Hallows' Eve-Halloween.
In the States and Great Britain children play Trick or Treat.
Pumpkins lanterns are used
and called Jack o' lanterns.
